抄録: Foreigners in Japan fall into distinct groups in terms of the eligibility of the allowed scope of economic activities in the light of immigration control. Some are legally entitled to work, while others are limited in the scope of activities to particular qualified jobs, or in the total amount of weekly work hours. Others are absolutely not allowed to work. When the visa a foreigner holds has expired, residence itself is illegal. Resident status basically determines foreigners' working as well as living conditions. Besides these institutional determinants, there are many factors which affect foreigners' working conditions. This paper aims to analyze the working and living conditions by category of foreigners in Japan.
